Schala has a chance to confront Grishe, who is brought out of stasis to undergo questioning regarding any illicit Earthbound activity of which he might be aware. Grishe happens to mention the names of his sons and daughter - Masa, Mune, and Doreen - while speaking with Schala in private. Schala says she can do nothing for Grishe now but offers to check on his children for him.

Melchior accompanies her for some reason and we learn that Schala knows the ins-and-outs of Earthbound script thanks to her interaction with Earthbound children. Both Schala and Melchior meet Masa and Mune and their big sister Doreen; all three are human children at this point. Grishe's children prove extremely endearing.

This leads to the discovery of a Lavos Spawn and its attendant creatures, which act as protectors and fetch raw materials (carbon from human flesh and bone, dreamstone, etc) to complete the spawn's growth.
